Beard Oil, Balm or Soap? A Simple Men’s Grooming Routine

Beard care can become complicated very quickly if you let the internet build the routine for you.

One person says you need a shelf full of products. Another says you need nothing but water and determination. We prefer the useful middle: cleanse when needed, add a little conditioning oil, use balm when you want more control, and pay attention to what your own beard is telling you.

Start with a clean beard

Facial hair collects sweat, food, salt air and the ordinary evidence of a full day. A dedicated cleansing bar such as our Mini Beard & Stache Soap gives you a compact option for home, travel or the gym.

Use warm—not scorching—water. Work up a modest lather, rinse thoroughly and pat the beard dry instead of attacking it with a towel. How often you cleanse depends on your routine, skin and product use; more washing is not automatically better.

Use beard oil for light conditioning

Minute Man Beard Oil is made with jojoba oil, argan oil, vitamin E and fragrance. A few drops can help condition facial hair and the skin beneath it without creating the hold of a waxier product.

Start small. Warm the oil between your palms, work it through the beard and comb it into place. You can always add another drop. Removing too much oil from a beard five minutes before leaving the house is a less elegant process.

Choose balm when you want shape and control

Beard balm adds more structure. Our 2 oz Minute Man Beard Balm combines tallow, beeswax, jojoba oil and other ingredients in a small-batch grooming balm designed to tame, condition and shape.

Scrape out a small amount, warm it fully between your fingers and palms, then distribute it through the beard. Use the remaining trace on your mustache if desired, keeping it away from the mouth and following the product directions.

For a different scent direction, Coastal Barbershop Beard Balm brings together whiskey, beachwood and tobacco character with locally sourced beeswax.

Do you need oil and balm together?

Not always. Oil is lighter; balm offers more hold. Some people use oil first and a very small amount of balm afterward. Others choose one based on beard length, weather and the finish they want.

Florida humidity has opinions of its own, so begin with less product and adjust. The goal is a beard that feels comfortable and looks intentional—not one that announces the entire routine from across the room.

Keep it simple enough to repeat

  1. Cleanse and rinse thoroughly.
  2. Pat dry, leaving the beard slightly damp if that works for you.
  3. Apply a few drops of oil and comb through.
  4. Add a small amount of balm when you want shape or control.
