How Beeswax & Tallow Candles Found Their Way to Harbor Morning
Honestly, it started with a question.
Someone asked me if microplastics existed in my current soy wax candles. I didn’t want to guess. I didn’t want to give a half-answer. So I started researching.
That research turned into hours of reading, emails, supplier questions, and more digging than I expected. What I learned was this: without sending a finished candle out for lab testing, I couldn’t give a 100% answer. And as a new small business, lab testing every product simply isn’t something we can afford yet.
But the question stuck with me.
It pushed me to start looking at older, more traditional candle-making materials. That’s when I found beeswax and tallow.
Beeswax and tallow candles felt different right away. They felt less like chasing a trend and more like returning to something older, simpler, and more rooted in tradition. Instead of relying only on modern waxes, this was a way to create a candle from two classic ingredients with a long history of use.
The next step was finding ingredients I actually trusted.
For the tallow, I found a USDA-inspected, food-grade beef tallow sourced here in the United States. It was clean, single-ingredient, and made with the kind of quality I wanted behind our name.
For the beeswax, I chose 100% natural beeswax that is triple-filtered, non-GMO, and cosmetic grade.
Once I had the ingredients, the bigger question became: how does this fit into Harbor Morning?
That answer came through the story.
Tallow and beeswax reminded me of older times. Not perfect times, but simpler ones. Times of lantern light, coastal tradesmen, working docks, family homes, and handmade goods created with purpose.
That feeling became the heart of our Trading Post Collection.
This collection is inspired by heritage, coastal craftsmanship, colonial history, and the spirit of protecting home, family, freedom, and Old Glory. It’s our way of honoring the past while still keeping everything connected to the coast.
Over time, beeswax and tallow naturally found their way into more than just candles. They became part of our Coastal Wellness products, bathhouse-style goods, balms, and men’s care line.
And honestly?
These are some of my favorite candles we make.
The way they look, the way they melt, and the way they carry scent all feel different. They feel rich, warm, nostalgic, and grounded. The scent profiles are built around memory, honor, tradition, and strength.
They aren’t just candles to us.
They’re a reminder that sometimes the best ideas don’t come from chasing what’s new.
Sometimes they come from looking back.
