Rhode Island Inspiration: Where Memories Become Scents

Rhode Island Inspiration: Where Memories Become Scents

One of the things I love most about Harbor Morning is that inspiration rarely comes from sitting behind a desk. More often, it comes from getting out into the world, meeting people, exploring new places, and creating memories worth sharing.

We recently wrapped up a wonderful trip to Rhode Island, and while it was certainly a vacation, it was also a reminder of why we started Harbor Morning in the first place.

Throughout our travels, we spent time with family and friends, met fellow makers and market owners, and explored communities that genuinely embrace local businesses. One thing that stood out almost immediately was the number of farmers markets and craft markets throughout the state. They seemed to be everywhere—advertised on signs, tucked into local communities, and filled with talented people creating products they were passionate about.

As a small business owner, it was refreshing to see.

During our travels, I also came across a retail store carrying many of the same types of products we create. Candles, home fragrance, and gifts filled the shelves. While their products were different from ours, seeing a store dedicated to products like these was inspiring. It served as a reminder that every successful business starts somewhere, often at a local market or a small event just like the ones where Harbor Morning began.

Maybe someday Harbor Morning will have a storefront of its own. Time will tell.

Of course, not all inspiration comes from business.

One of the highlights of the trip was spending time along Newport’s famous Cliff Walk. Standing on the rocky shoreline, watching waves crash against the coast while historic mansions overlooked the Atlantic, had a way of slowing everything down. We climbed along the rocks, listened to the ocean, and simply enjoyed the moment.

Those are the experiences that tend to stay with you.

As we walked, I found myself paying attention to the details that often become part of future scents. The salty ocean air. The sun-warmed stone. The coastal greenery growing between weathered rocks. The feeling of standing on the edge of the Atlantic with nothing but open water stretching toward the horizon.

The best Harbor Morning scents don’t begin with fragrance oils.

They begin with memories.

Every collection we create has a story behind it. Sometimes it’s a childhood memory. Sometimes it’s a place we’ve visited. Sometimes it’s a conversation with a customer. And sometimes it’s a trip like this one that plants the seed for something new.

In fact, this trip sparked an idea for a brand-new scent that we’re excited to begin testing once we’re back home. Whether it becomes a candle, a wax melt, or something entirely different remains to be seen, but that’s part of the fun.

The creative process often starts with a simple moment and grows from there.

As Harbor Morning continues to grow, trips like this remind us why we do what we do. We’re not simply making candles. We’re capturing experiences, places, and memories that people can bring into their homes.

Rhode Island gave us plenty of new memories to work with.

And if all goes well, some of those memories will soon become scents you can enjoy too.

Until then, we’ll keep exploring, creating, and finding inspiration wherever the tide takes us.
